3D printed and painted King & Country buildings at different scales

3D Printing Scaled Buildings With Solid Versions

3D printing allows us to easily scale models in our slicer, making terrain building for various games easier than ever. But one issue you can run into when scaling models, especially when scaling them down, is that details are lost, and failures can happen when parts get too thin.

So, to help with that, we made solid versions of some of our buildings. We’ve filled in the interiors of these buildings, so they can be scaled up or down without worry about details causing print failures. It does mean, however, you can’t access the interiors, which is fine for most wargames at those smaller scales.

To scale your solid models, we’ve made a handy guide on each of our models’ pages called the scale calculator. This is found under its tab on each model page and shows the models’ scale as per the STL you buy, and the % by which you can print at to achieve some other common scales. For a more in-depth guide, check out this article on scale.

Solid building in the slicer showing interior of the building

In your slicer, you’ll see the interior is fully filled in. So print times can vary a lot between buildings and scales but will definitely be faster than printing the whole 28mm building in full with all levels. It does mean you have to paint in your windows. We just chose black normally, but painting in some sky reflections could also look great.

Here’s an article on building a Normandy table using King & Country’s scale buildings. It covers the printing, painting, and finishing to get a great table ready to roll dice on.

Here is a list of models we have currently available as solid versions:

King & Country Solids

Other Solids

Our ships also offer solid options, but care should be taken not to scale them too small, as details such as railings can be lost.

We’re always adding to this list, so if you have a building you’d love to see a solid version of, so you can scale it for your wargame, be sure to let us know.
