Mangrove trees tend to grow in warmer, humid climates, especially in swamps and estuaries, where their roots snake down into the warm water to draw forth nutrients.

Is a raft recommended to keep the roots in place long enough form them to form the trunk?

Yes. A raft helps with the adhesion of lots of small pieces.
