How to build a square castle
In this article, we’ll show you how to build a simple square castle using the Throne & Ash models. The campaign was designed around SystemHEX, which is intended for hexagonal options, but within SystemHEX, you can still build good old-fashioned square castles.

To build the square castle you see in this article, you’ll need the following printed and ready to go:
- 1 Square bastion
- 1 Ruined Square bastion
- 1 Barracks
- 1 Ruined barracks
- 1 Gatehouse
- 1 Steps
- 8 connectors
- 5 straight 180 walls
- 4 Buttresses & 4 ruined buttresses
- Enough doors and windows to fill all the plugs (we used 28 windows and 10 doors)
- 16 corbels

Here’s a simple layout guide for this build you can use as a reference. It gives a clear idea of how this build is going to work.

First, make the corner bastions, attaching the connectors in L shapes with the walls on the outside. Insert the doors where the walls connect and fill the rest with the windows. Do this with the ruined square bastion and the two barracks as well.

After making the corners, we have to fill in the straight gaps between them. We start by laying them out in the desired arrangement before locking them together.

We’re happy that everything looks like it will fit, so the next step is slotting them all together. We started at the gate house and made our way around clockwise, putting the piece of wall next to the gate in last.

Now all we have left to add are the buttresses around the castle and the steps.

And there we have it. One strong-looking, albeit half-ruined square castle. From this point, you could make it larger by adding longer straight walls between the corner bastions, or you could use the angled hex connectors to tessellate with the squares to add more sections to your castle complex.
A square is just one of the many kinds of layouts you can build with Throne & Ash so experiment and try things out. We’ll be sharing more builds in the coming posts, so stay tuned.
Thank you for sharing the overview and answering my question. Looks good! Any possibility to add round bastions to the stretch goals?
Yes Round Towers are already on the stretch goals, these can be used as bastions.
Could you please put this in a PDF for download?
Matt, what scale would you say these models are? I am also interested in printing them for my n-scale model railroad. Also, is there a “ how to” for painting structures for beginners? Thanks for the high quality prints! Tom
They are about 1:56, we have a blog about to to scale here. Scaling Models
Uh, I got a different response off your Facebook page.
Hi Konrad
The Thrones and Ash are 32mm Scale, so you need to reduce to about 62%.
I calculated for N scale, you need to put the models on 33.75% then you have the right scale

I was referring to @Matt Baker’s reply that said: They are about 1:56, referring to the initial model.
Got it, I should read more carefully, 32mm is 1/56 scale. Thank you !
Tom,
They print wonderfully at 45% and 50% of the production scale… So in my opinion, you would be fine at roughly 39%, which I believe would be N-Scale. I don’t have the Throne and Ash, but I do have the King and Country series.
I will print a King or Country Castle or building at 39% if you would like.
I have a Bambu P1S and a A1 printer among others. But these are the FDM printers I rely upon.

Just let me know.
Assembly guides for various layouts are handy for a lot of folks, glad to see one pop up 🙂
This is really appreciated! I Look forward to more in future!
