Description
In the early medieval society, chapels served not only as places of worship but also as vital centres of community belief and local identity. They were often small, sacred spaces where villagers gathered for prayer, guidance, and protection, making them deeply symbolic of the community’s faith and unity. Because of this importance, chapels frequently became targets during periods of invasion or conflict — attacking or destroying a chapel was a way for invaders to weaken the morale and spiritual strength of the people. Their religious treasures, manuscripts, and relics also made them valuable spoils, further motivating attackers to seize or desecrate these holy sites.
