Building Modular Space Hulk Maps. Part I
In this article, we’ll show a few variations of modular maps inspired by layouts from Games Workshop’s board game Space Hulk (4th edition). These fan-made builds recreate the feel of the first six missions, but they can also be used for any futuristic game system set in space or underground bases. Being modular means you’ll never play the same layout twice.

We’ve designed these modular maps in Terrain Tinker using the Spaceport Ships terrain. Above, you’ll see the base components needed for building these Space Hulk maps. The layouts use eight different “blocks” that are repeated and rotated to create an infinite number of layout possibilities. We’ll include links to the Terrain Tinker build so you can simply download, print, and play. You only need to download the above files and repeat them as needed for each mission, if that is easier for you.

Mission I

Make a short dash through the space hulk to reach the control room and destroy the controls for some lifeboats. Seems simple enough, but this vitally important mission will test the heroes to their limit.

Mission II

Split up over a junction between two collided hulls, the heroes are tasked with covering the main thoroughfare from aliens getting through and stopping their advance.

Mission III

A unit sent to scan the hulk needs manual retrieval, so the heroes embark on a two-pronged attack to both purge the halls of aliens and retrieve the unit and bring it to safety.

Mission IV

Members of your squad have been captured alive, so it’s up to the heroes to go on the offensive and bring them back from the deadly aliens aboard the space hulk.

Mission V

The heroes lure the aliens away from their actual target, a ship with access to a toxic gas that can flood the aliens’ territory and wipe them out. The only catch is it’s deadly to humans, too.

Mission VI

Members of the squad remain alive but unresponsive, so a team is sent to link up with them and determine what happened, all the while repelling further assaults by the aliens.

Each mission has several doors scattered throughout the map, but we recommend printing them separately so you can place and swap them between missions.
This is just Part 1, based on half of the missions from the rulebook. We’ll cover the remaining 6 in a future article. But hopefully this is more than enough to get started with!
